Here's the session that I was mentioning in the meeting on the modules for the LMS
Off the Shelf and Out of the Box: Saving Time, Meeting Outcomes and Reaching Students with Information Literacy Modules by Jennifer Kelley, College of DuPage kelleyj [at]cod.edu
This presentation will describe the creation and implementation of Information Literacy Modules, self-contained units of generic information literacy instruction easily embedded into Blackboard courses and designed to support general education outcomes for information literacy while requiring little maintenance from librarians. Attendees will learn about the challenges and rewards of creating self-contained information literacy units for distance learning and walk away with ideas and methods for developing similar content for their own institutions.

Library will be embedded in every single class in WS State University
“Librarians Corner” tab inserted in every Blackboard course
UNCG – Beth Filar Williams
“Ask Us” is incorporated in every course on Blackboard
Usability study on PATH Tutorials (10 modules on information literacy)

10:45-11:20 - Breakout Group Round 1
Active learning / engagement with technology - synchronous online instruction (Katy K)
Group Members: Katy Kavanagh, ECU, facilitated, Mary Krauter UNCG head of reference - Talked about change of name for their ref department emphasis on desk triage task force, Mimi Smith coster unaffiliated/UNCG LIS grad, Jennifer Scully at high point u,Melinda Livis from Winston Salem State
Webcam, do you use or not? Helps remember name, but bandwidth issues; try to use a slide with your image but no webcam.
Active Learning: Sandbox for questions; Interaction - Hands/yes/no; ground rules so attendees know they will participate; Poll anywhere built ins Which do you prefer? Both! Library instruction online courses hard to pay attention when you are losing students - how do you address getting participation from the whole course? Engaged: expect it is worse in online. Group work as a carrot on a stick, ask what project topics are. Also ask the instructor to be there and keep people on task, as a kind of team teaching. Don't have people try the chat on cue In a class (?)
Chat Reference: Reference category of chat is going up at uncg, ncknows as a backup for chat, questions of is this a real person? Do chat during the day, try to have chat as well staffed as we can. Intern and library staff librarian hours at the desk, chat is more mobile librarians from home on chat, on the phone. Intern nerd help they can call, chat as by mobile. 1 out of 10 or 20 consult a print source; Crazy library assignments still get these at ecu and uncg. Health science library questions after hours who takes chat after hours? Business librarian at uncg gets a lot of questions just for him, knows assignments really well. Transfer of chats, work in satellite library, cannot do this. Get chat questions about blackboard - Not a library concern, but becomes a library concern. Libraryh3lp, all we're using this. Lib answers online demo at uncg
Linked boxes in libguides is great! Reasons not to link boxes: Link is the same for every class in blackboard, goes to libguides page discipline specific
Traveling: do face-to-face, need another class? In blackboard? Go to meeting? Skype? Google hangouts? Blackboard collaborate?
LMS: Files sharing groups in blackboard; Committees at uncg; HR things on blackboard at high point, not doing this at all at ecuFacebook is thinking about making a LMS in the process of doing it. Desire 2 learn at Madison, better than Moodle. Blackboard modules at ecu: new!
Blogs or professional development ideas as a closer; Nursing conference Melinda distance chat meet synchronously nc ties conference technology tools very helpful to get involved in non- library groups. Education committee in American chemical society.
Active learning / engagement with technology - asynchronous online instruction (Megan J)
How to create a sense of community in asynchronous online instruction? Is it really always necessary?
The role of tutorials and assignments to promote student engagement
Subject specialist may help foster sense of community and student engagement
Teaching on Facebook, blog, other venues?
Need to create concrete learning goals and make the assignments relevant, which assignments are best?
Assessment tools: via discussions, essays, quizzes, other methods?
Placing students in teams may facilitate discussion- the discussion has to be relevant.
Experimenting with “flipped” instruction in an asynchronous setting
Student-to-instructor interaction/communication is very important!
Take away: there are various techniques to create an effective asynchronous class. We centered on creating a sense of community but concluded that it is not always necessary to create community- some learning types just want the knowledge..
Active learning / engagement with technology - f2f instruction (Jenny D)
round robin start - how use technology in f2f
Sam @ hpu - figuring out what/how to use; not much media instruction for comm studies dept
Anne @ ncstate - scavenger hunt = good for basic intro, but not teach higher level skills; tech is hard in current classroom set up; classroom in a box possible? testing the website to see if resources can work on ipad; challenge of incorporating tech f2f while keeping it interactive and scale scope of content
Kathy @ hpu - use smart board in teaching; biggest challenge is time (incorporate tech in meaningful way with minimum start up); way to make upper level instruction more engaged
Joy @ wfu - credit classes; interviewed all credit instructors and brought together the best of their materials for a template; will put into wordpress so others can use; newest piece = molly doing her scholarly comm presentation on video; kyle developing plagiarism section in spring
eportfolios: more classes requiring; how support in relation to images/copyright?;
active learning and tech: tech can be more of barrier than necessary for active learning; libguides polls are helpful; set up time and explanation takes too much time or students get confused/need to move on;
google forms for on spot assessment, but create one for each course?
try to find a tool for in class assessment can be problem
moving worksheets online instead of paper form
teaching discovery interfaces issues; need to emphasize not use ALL; take 10 minutes at end of class to suggest dbases for individual students
issue is that students try to satisfice, but not finding best source
11:25 - 12:00 - Breakout Group Round 2
Video tutorials -- cross-platform issues/solutions (BFW)
discussed Youtube vs HTML 5 Video. Youtube was dismissed earlier b/c of quality issues but they are getting better; reasons not to use youtube included campuses branding all youtube videos and the library doesn't want to be a part of that brandings; ads in videos (but you can turn off?); you want to host in house b/c you have staff and technology and you think you can built on it to go more awesome stuff!; some places block videos (mainly school libraries)
online modules (into LMS) -- challenges and opportunities (Elizabeth N)
creating modules that could be accessible even if student not registered in the course
how do embedded libs keep up with multiple courses; email alert systems?
assessment (for online learning) (Kathy S)
serving needs of those with disabilities; assessing websites and other tech in relation
assessing chat reference questions!
virtual intern training modules and how to assess them?
assessing of the learning in addition to the use
how train both f2f librarians and faculty to adapt to online teaching
12:00 - 12:30 - large group regather: share & comments from breakout groups
12:30-12:45 - wrap up, next meeting, announcements etc
12:45.... walk over to Tate St (Thai Garden) for LUNCH
