The same combination with different tones can mean different things. For example, (dumpling) and (sleeping)
There are four tones and one light sound in Chinese speaking. Once you know how to combine consonant and vowel, then add the right tone, you can speak Chinese.
First tone: this tone sounds like how you pronounce English alphabet in a flat way
b + ei = bei
Second tone: this tone sounds like the way you say "see", which goes up.
Third tone: this tone sounds like the way you say "well", which goes down and up.
Fourth tone: this tone sounds like the way you say "go", which goes down.
Light tone: this tone sounds short and light.
