Food Chain
Plants are defined as Producers since they can "produce" their own food using sunlight.
(Also referred to as Autotrophs=Self + Nutrition)
Animals are defined as Consumers and need to take food from others (since they cannot make food for themselves).
(Also referred to as Heterotrophs=Different + Nutrition)
Consumers can be divided into subtypes:
- Herbivores are Consumers that eat plants.
- Carnivores are Consumers that eat animals.
- Omnivores are Consumers that eat plants and animals.
- Detrivores are Consumers that eat dead plant and dead animal materials.
- The Top Predator is at the highest level Consumer of a food chain and does not have any Consumers that use it for food.

Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which only plants convert sunlight into food (sugar). This process occurs primarily in the leaves where carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight are combined. The products are food and oxygen. The food all plants produce is a form of sugar (glucose). Each biome requires plants to provide energy to later levels of the biome's food chain. Later levels include herbivores, carnivores, and top predators. The process converts light energy=>food (chemical energy)
Respiration is the process where plants and animals convert this food (sugar) into energy for growth/movement. The process is the reverse of Photosynthesis. The process converts food (chemical energy) =>Energy (move and grow).
Photosynthesis Lyrics
If you want to know
How a plant grows
It takes water, air, and sunlight
to make cellulose (food).
Every plant can do this
Fundamental process
And we can call this Photosynthesis
Unlike me and you, plants need CO2,
and they make oxygen to stop us turning blue.
Every plant can do this,
Fundamental process
And we can call this Photosynthesis
Its a miracle how all the chlorophyll
captures sunlight in the leaves
of the plants and the trees.
A plant of any size can do it if it tries
But we're not green so we can't photosynthesize.
Every plant can do this,
Fundamental process
And we can call this Photosynthesis
Its a miracle how all the chlorophyll
captures sunlight in the leaves
of the plants and the trees.
Every plant can do this,
Fundamental process
And we can call this Photosynthesis
Every plant can do this,
Fundamental process
And we can call this Photosynthesis
