Immigration Day Information

Mt. Sinai Elementary School

Mount Sinai New York 11766

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Friday, June 10th the fourth grade students will celebrate Immigration Day. They will be learning about Ellis Island and our country’s rich heritage. Students will be engaged in several hands-on activities related to immigration.

We would like all the students to be dressed as “third class or steerage passengers.” Students should try to dress as a relative that immigrated to the United States. Some suggestions for dress on this day include:

· Wear old looking clothing or clothing that represents your heritage

· Carry a small form of luggage labeled 3rd Class and full name

· Wear a kerchief or hat

· Wear any other items that represent your heritage

Thanks to our wonderful PTO, we will be having a 4th grade BBQ after our immigration activities are completed.

We are looking forward to a wonderful day and delicious celebration!

Thank You,

The Fourth Grade Teachers

One of the immigration stations requires the following information:

1. Student’s name

2. A relative’s name and date of birth

3. Country of origin

4. Year or date when the relative immigrated to the U.S.

5. Age at the time of immigration

6. Occupation

7. Other interesting facts or information about their story

Students will write this information on the front and back of an index card (3x5). They will “travel” with this information and their passports from station to station.
