I have been reading eBook's for about three years on Amazon Kindle devices and more recently on an iPad. It took some getting used to when I first started. Initially, reading an eBook on a flat mobile device felt awkward compared to a book. I did not like that I could not see the page I was on at the bottom of the screen or easily know when the end of a chapter was approaching. Both of those issues have been resolved on my newer device. I was also not a fan of the page turning on a mobile device compared to turning an actual paper book page. And, oddly I missed the smell of a traditional book. Once I adjusted to those changes, I really began loving eBook's.
During my time in graduate school, I have found that being able to download eBook's to a mobile device is much easier than carrying around traditional books. It gives me the flexibility to read anywhere, anytime as long as I have my device with me. For example, I can wait for my children at an extracurricular activity and read a chapter or two out of several books and only need to have my mobile device with me instead of luging several books. Portability is also a huge benefit to high school and undergraduate students. Additional advantages of eBooks are that they are more engaging, money saving and paperless making them better for the environment. For administrators, eBooks are easier to manage inventory of.
This semester, I read the eBook Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed American Forever by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. The non-fiction eBook was about the 1865 assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. I enjoy reading books about history and this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed enjoyed the way the book was written. Once I started reading, I did not want to put the book down. Reading the detailed events of the last battles of the Civil War and the details included in the days leading up to Lincoln's killing was absolutely fascinating. It was so interesting that there was no Secret Service to protect the president. And, the whole story of John Wilkes Booth and the conspiracy was intriguing. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
