Meeting at Meadowood Retirement Facility

Jo Weddle, MCRTA President, addressed the group about the order of the afternoon's

activities: a delicious lunch catered by Meadowood, a short business meeting, and then

our program, Gary Plaford with a comedy routine.

Jo introduced Gary and and his wife, Linda Plaford as well as David Lennen, our Area 8

IRTA director. Jo asked for a moment of silence to remember those in harm's way,

including Marilyn Schwartzkoff, a former MCCSC teacher, because of hurricane

Florence barreling into the East coast as well as for Mary Samuelsen, a former MCRTA

member and president, because of her failing health. ( Those wishing to write her may

do so at her son's address: c/o Eric Samuelsen, 2644 N. 850 W, Provo, UT 84604 )

Meeting: Jo drew our attention to many papers on our table. They focused on the

following:

1. On our tables was an overview of the officers and their contact information and a

list of this year's programs and dates for those meetings. She reminded us of

donations to IRTA Foundation and to forward any information to Sandy Bender

about former teachers who passed away

.

2. The nominating committee needs 1-2 members who worked in the MCCSC.

3. The October 16 th meeting is from 1:00- about 4:00 and will be at the IU Shuel

Academic Center, the IU Football Stadium addition, and the Excellence Academy

with a tour of those facilities. A member of the IU Ten from the late 60's

football program will be speaking about his experience at IU during those

turbulent times.

4. The November 12 th meeting will be a joint meeting with Delta Kappa Gamma

listening to Terry Clapacs talk about his new book, “Indiana University

Bloomington- America's Legacy Campus”. It will be at the MCCSC Service Building

from 1:00-3:00.

5. Jo reviewed some of the challenges she would like our chapter to take on this

year: increase volunteer hours to 20,000- please be recording your volunteer

time; increase our membership; work toward getting the Clock Award for our Area

8 again as well as the Honorable Mention awards through volunteer hours; possibly

getting a group project award through one of these projects- volunteering at New

Hope, First Book, Teachers' Warehouse, or the Foundation of MCCS;

6. The Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is September 27 th evening at IVY Tech.

7. Membership in IRTA has many benefits; Jo had brochures on our table to help us

become informed about various discounts. Visit www.retiredteachers.org to read

more information about those benefits.

8. David Lennen, our Area 8 director, reviewed several topics with us. This was his

4 th visit with the MCRTA in 2018.

9. We all sang Happy birthday to Barb Horvath.

Program: Gary Plaford, former director of Social Services for the MCCSC, presented

a comedy routine for our program. There was lots of laughter during his 25+ minute

routine. Many thanks to Gary.

Respectively submitted,

Nancy Stockwell
