Monroe County Retired Teachers' Association Board Minutes
Meeting: August 8, 2018
Location: Old National Bank
Jo Weddle. President of MCRTA, called the Board Meeting to order and took attendance. 9 other members were present in addition to Jo. They were: Terry Daugherty, Linda Woods, Mike Horvath, Lu Mercier, Dianne Shewmaker, Jan Ault, Judith Olmsted, Benny Holt, and Nancy Stockwell.
Jo handed out folders with the agenda, directory of officers and their contact information, responsibilities of each officer, the Constitution and By-Laws, a program and planning sheet about our probable meetings this year, goals for the year, a sheet to record volunteer hours and a challenge to increase our hours over last year, and information about the various state awards.
Meeting Agenda:
Discussion of Constitution and By-Laws: eliminate telephone tree, discussion of job responsibilities to clarify them for folks who might want to become an officer, discussion of whether the term for officers is 1 year which is what we are doing or 2 years- which is what the Constitution says - Jo suggested checking with Martha Street on that.
Membership Discussion: Mike Horvath, membership chairman, said our paid membership has ranged from 136-176 in recent years; we had a discussion of how to increase membership in IRTA, and it was suggested sharing all the benefits of membership again; there are about 362 IRTA members; we discussed whether we should keep local dues as they are at $5.00 or raise them- for now, stay at $5.00.
Programs: There was a discussion of the potential programs for this year. The first meeting is Thursday, September 13 from 11:30-1:30 at Meadowood. After a short business meeting, Gary Playford will present our program: “Life and Relationships are full of irony...let's talk and laugh about that...a comedy set.” At the end of these minutes is copy of the programs for 2018-2019.*
Public Relations: we need to work to get more MCRTA news in the newspaper.
Legislation: Linda Woods reported we are getting our 13th check the end of August.
Community Service: We discussed trying to get more volunteer hours and to get the members to complete their forms and send them to Dianna Johnson in early 2019; suggestions for volunteer opportunities- First Book; Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools; Volunteering in classrooms, Teachers Warehouse and Science Resource Center, New Hope Shelter.
Technology: Terry Daugherty said he would check with the state regarding a MCRTA Facebook page.
Social Committee: Benny Holt said we need more folks on the social committee to help with treats for various meetings.
Necrology: We need to notify Sandy Bender if a retired educator from Monroe/Owen county passes away.
Nominating – The nominating committee needs a few more members, preferably from the MCCSC and/or RBB, to give a wider knowledge base when nominating officers.
Fall IRTA Meeting: October 8th in Evansville; let Jo know if you are interested in attending.
The meeting concluded with many thanks from Jo for our input and thanks to Jo for all her work thus far.
Respectively submitted,
Nancy Stockwell, Secretary
