Physical Education

9 PE - 285023

This class is for Freshmen who are not in Choir. Physical Education units may include: endurance and strength weight training, circuit training, fitness walking/track and field, aerobic exercise, pickleball, badminton, multi games/cultural games, project adventure, team sports and field games.  The focus of 9th grade Physical Education is to offer a variety of experiences to allow opportunities for personal growth.

9 WELLNESS PE - 285021

This is an every other day 9th grade PE class that is paired with 9th grade choir.  PE and choir will alternate every other day.  This class lasts for the entire school year.  Physical Education units may include: endurance and strength weight training, circuit training, fitness walking/track and field, aerobic exercise, pickleball, badminton, multi games/cultural games, project adventure, team sports and field games. The focus of 9th grade Physical Education is to offer a variety of experiences to allow opportunities for personal growth.

EARLY HOUR PE - 285265

Early Hour PE is an offering only for students who have full schedules both semesters of the school year. The class meets with the PE Staff before the start of the regular school day. Students create individual fitness programs, workout outside of the school day in addition to scheduled in class workouts.  Students will also journal their workouts and complete supplemental course related assignments.

BEGINNER PERFORMANCE PE - 

Beginner PPE is tailored for students that are new to weight training . A large focus will be placed on improving the components of sport related fitness: agility, speed, power, balance, coordination, and reaction time while learning proper lifting and training techniques.  This class is open to all students in grades 9-12. This class meets 2-3 times per week during the school day for the entire school year.  On the days students do not meet for PE, they will attend study hall.

Credits - 1/2 credit per semester; must take full year

INTERMEDIATE PERFORMANCE PE -

This is a strength and conditioning course geared toward athletic performance.  A large focus will be placed on improving the components of sport related fitness: agility, speed, power, balance, coordination, and reaction time. All athletes at MCHS in grades 9-12 will be placed in one of the performance PE classes.  However, this class is open to all students in grades 9-12.  This class meets 2-3 times per week during the school day for the entire school year.  On the days students do not meet for PE, they will attend study hall.

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PE - 285266 

This is a strength and conditioning course for students who are serious about training. Students must have previous weight lifting experience with a certified strength coach in order to be enrolled in this class. A large focus will be placed on improving the components of sport related fitness: agility, speed, power, balance, coordination, and reaction time as well Olympic lifting. All athletes at MCHS in grades 9-12 will be placed in one of the performance PE classes. This class meets 2-3 times per week in the morning before the school day begins for the entire school year. On the days students do not meet for PE, they will not be required to attend class.

FITNESS WALKING - 285202

The emphasis for this course is on walking activities. A variety of walking activities will be utilized while instructing students on the benefits of movement, exercise, and lifelong fitness. Walking activities take place inside and outside.  Wellness lessons are also included in this course.  Opportunities will be available for students to participate in a culminating event, if they so desire, such as walking or running a 5k road race.

LIFETIME AND WELLNESS ACTIVITIES - 285183

Lifetime wellness activities: Students will be active participants in activities geared toward lifelong wellness and movement. Examples of lifetime activities that will be taught include: tennis, golf, disc golf, walking/hiking, pickleball, badminton, and table tennis. Additional recreational and fitness development activities will be included.  Wellness activities include: mindfulness, self-care, stress management, and movement for enjoyment.

OUTDOOR PURSUITS - 285270

This physical education course is for the outdoor enthusiast. Activities will be focused on opportunities that primarily take place in a natural environment. Students will be taught ways in which activity, movement, and health enhancing concepts can blend with nature, the outdoor environment, and physical activity for lifelong enjoyment. Activities include, walking, hiking, outdoor survival skills–including tenting and tarping, mountain biking, knot tying, snow shoeing, orienteering, and cross country skiing.  Additional activities may include: swimming, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

PERSONAL FITNESS PLAN - 285223

The personal fitness plan course has been designed to provide an alternative approach to the traditional physical education curriculum for eligible senior students at MCHS. It requires students to be self-directed as they create and carry out an individual plan for fitness development.

PREREQUISITE– must have had a B or higher in any previous High School Physical Education Course, must have completed 3 years of Physical Education prior to enrolling in PFP as a senior.

TEAM SPORTS - 285271

Students in grades 10-12 who wish to be a part of team sports and activities can choose this course. The sport education model will be used to teach students about all aspects of being on a team. Students will be assigned roles and responsibilities such as coach, manager, statistician, official, team leaders, etc. while participating in team sports such as basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, ultimate, softball, flag football, and soccer.

UNIFIED PE - 502801

Unified PE is an adapted physical education class for students who need differentiated instruction in physical education class.  This course is also available for students from the general education population who want to be peer leaders and assist students in their participation, skill development, and understanding of content. Students will participate in a wide variety of activities to gain exposure to health, fitness, and recreation activities. An integral part of Unified PE is socialization and interpersonal skill development. Students will engage in a variety of activities such as: team sports, fitness games, personal fitness plans, lifetime activities, project adventure activities, dance, Special Olympics, parachute, and other recreational activities.

YOGA AND FITNESS - 285243

This sophomore - senior level Physical Education course is geared toward the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles through a variety of movement forms such as Yoga and other fitness development activities. Opportunities for improved muscular and cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance and posture are components of this class along with developing wellness concepts such as mindfulness, nutrition and stress management.
