Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team (MAFIT) of Boulder County
Purpose
The MAFIT was formed in 1993 for the purpose of providing agencies in and around Boulder County, Colorado a resource to assist in the determination of origin and cause of fires. The team has extensive education and experience in the area of fire and explosion investigation as well as law enforcement training that can aid in the apprehension of arson suspects. The resource is free of charge to requesting agencies on a mutual aid basis. The MAFIT assists with the investigation of explosions and fires in structures, vehicles, and wildlands.
Roles and Responsibilities
The investigation team will function as a resource to and at the discretion of the agency that has statutory jurisdiction over the investigation of the incident (the “requesting agency”).
The Team will assist the requesting agency to the degree that is practicable and consistent with the purpose of the team and all legal considerations.
The team will furnish a written origin and cause report to the requesting agency, when appropriate.
The team will maintain a repository of all pertinent records, reports, evidence, and etceteras.
There will be no fee charged to the requesting agency for the use of the MAFIT.
The MAFIT will provide its services to agencies outside of Boulder County if requested, however, only if it does not impose a strain on in-county resources.
The team will provide the necessary investigative equipment and materials for its members to fulfill their role.
Mission Statement
To assist regional fire agencies in the thorough investigation of fire and explosions within their jurisdictions and in a professional manner consistent with the mutual goal of determining origin and cause.
Goals and Objectives
To notify and assist the appropriate law enforcement agency in the determination and apprehension of suspects from incidents of a criminal nature.
To promote education and training in fire and explosion investigation.
To develop continually refined policies and procedures for: the smooth operation of the team;efficient investigations; complete follow-up; and widespread respect for the team.
To identify and utilize additional private and public resources available to assist the team in achieving these goals and objectives.
