Here are some pictures of the 'lost' farms of Brinscall. They were 'lost' towards the end of the 19th century. You may like to try and find them..The header to this page is of Ratten Clough, probably the best preserved 'lost' farm.
FROM BRINSCALL
On the way up Well Lane to Ratten Clough, you go past Ripping lost farm on the left and Heatons farm lost in the wood - hundred yds up track on right...
Look out for orange algae (Trentepohlia sp.) on trees.
And where you turn left for Ratten Clough , there is Whittle's lost farm on right.....
Check out the Bilberries on the way - a possible source of income for somebody..fresh, local, organic..free
Past Ratten Clough is Solomon's Temple (but no religion here) looking towards Darwen Tower
FROM WHITE COPPICE
Should this be added to the 'lost' farms? This sign says two things:
1. The name implies wood/willow would have been grown here, as willow is 'coppiced' for fuel
2. They produced dairy cows up the turn of this century. National Trust Research shows how grass-fed cattle, like this would have been, is better for health of people and planet.
Find Sharrock's lost farm on left along track
Here is the Goit, carrying drinking water to Liverpool
which brings you back to Brinscall Wood..
