“The Petitioner of Josiah Gilbert- late a non-Commissed officer- in the Kings American Regimt respectfully shews That your Petitioner is lately arrived from Nova Scotia with his wife and Family & that he received 200 acres of Land in that Country That your petitioner is desirous to settle on the lands of the Crown in this Province, being in a condition to cultivate and improve the same. That he has taken the usual oaths, & is ready to subscribe the declaration, that he professes the Christian Religion, and obedience to the laws, and has lived inoffensively in the country which he has left. Prays your Excellency, would be pleased to grant him at the Long pt settlet 400 acres of land upon the terms and conditions expressed in your Excellency’s proclamation bearing date the 7th day of February, 1792, or such other quantity of land as to your Excellency in your wisdom may think meet. “Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner is a Loyalist, also for his Loyalty, suffered imprisonment, and loss of a considerable property – and upon his coming into the Province in the year 1794 – His Excellency the Lieut Governor was pleased to confirm him in a grant of Two Hundred acres for the present, and said he should have an additional Grant of six Hundred Acres, which your petitioner has been led to believe was granted to him the year following – and that your Petitioner believes his name was inserted on the Plans in the Survey Generals office for two additional Lots – As His Excellency was pleased to extend His Majestys Bounty to your Petitioner, on account of his sufferings – and of his large Family, then consisting of a wife and six children – and now of Eight. “Humbly Sheweth—That your Petitioner in [blank] endeavoured to Join His Majesty’s Forces at Staten Island was apprehended at Amboy in New Jersey from thence sent back to the place he came from in From (Westmoreland County, Pennslvania) and after a long confinement was admitted to Bail. Your Petitioners Brother was more Successfull; he arrived safe in New York and served on Board His Majesty’s Navy till the end of the War; was at the Defeat of DeGrass, and brought home Ld Rodney’s certificate of His Good behaviour—Your petitioner early after the peace came to Detroit; but no encouragement then being given to Settlers he returned to Westmoreland—Your Petitioner has now come forward in behalf of himself and a number of Young Men from Westmoreland, all Good Marksmen and if encouraged, hope to give yr Excellency convincing proofs of their Dexterity in handling a Rifle—Your Petitioner is a married man has Six Children, and pray a Grant of Land between Pattersons Creek & Grand River or such other Relief as your Excellency may seem meet—and your Petitioner will ever pray—[Signed] Matthew Gilmore” Received at the Executive Council Office on 8 Sep 1794. “That your Petitioner served His Majesty as a Serjent in the first Battalion of New jersey Volunteers During the war with America and by many Misfortunes and Circumstances was Unable to come to this Province with his family till august 1798. Your Petitioner therefore Prays your Honor to take his case into consideration and grant him five Hundred Acres of Land, being the Quantity usualy given to Non-commissioned Officers, and that the same may be Located in Some part of the Country of Long point and your Petitioner as in Duty Bound will ever Pray. “Humbly Sheweth – That your Petitioner joined the Royal Standard in America in the 1777. That he Served in the first battallion of New Jersey Volunteers, Commanded by General Skinner, as a Serjeant. That he is a U. E. Loyalist And that he has never received any Land or Order for Land from the Crown – Wherefore Your Petitioner Humbly prays that Your Excellency would be pleased to Grant him (as a Serjeant) Such a quantity of the waste lands of the Crown in the Province as to your Excellency Shall Seem meet – And your Petitioner as in duty bound will pray – [Signed] Reuben Green District of London 11th January 1811” Received at the Executive Council Office on 22 Jan 1811.
