Chronology of The Long Point Settlement

Introduction

The following chronology detailing the arrivals of the earliest pioneers in the Long Point Settlement is a summary of the documemtary research to date and of many discussions with other local historians and family researchers. It places in order who arrived when by way of such official documents as the land petitions, early surveys, militia muster rolls, deeds registers, court records, assessments and census, and many other sources. Each listing is end noted as to source.

While extensive, the list is not complete. For example, the tradesman who rented a property in one of the early villages such as Port Dover, Simcoe or Waterford might have filed no official records. The only census surviving was the 1812 Census of Woodhouse Township so there is no single comprehensive county record to enumerate everyone. It took a study of a wide range of sources to develop the list.

Some exact pioneer arrival dates were provided in the records. For instance the 1799 Muster Rolls of Charlotteville Township included a category “How Long In The County.” Quite often though, the source is the date of their first appearance in an official record. The actual arrival would have been some weeks or months earlier.

Happy Hunting,
