Lake Erie’s Isle of Romance

by William Austin Gordon

This is a rare publication privately published by William Austin Gordon in a very limited quantity in 1934. It looks more like a photograph album with original pictures throughout. This is a pictorial history of Long Point on Lake Erie in the southernmost part of Norfolk County, originally called "The Long Point Settlement". The scenes in some of the pictures have long since ceased to exist.

Originally, at the time of the first pioneer settlers, Long Point was a peninsula. During the mid 1800's a storm cut through its neck making Long Point an island and that was the status at the time of publication. During World War II, a causeway from the mainland to the island was put in place, once again creating a peninsula as it was in pioneer times.

The copy of Lake Erie's Isle of Romance in my possession has some moisture damage on the cover and first two pages under a previous owner. The subsequent pages are in good to excellent condition. Between each of the pages is tissue paper with a description of the image on the next photo page below.

I am pleased to share this rare publication in its original condition with visitors to this site. The entire seventeen page publication will be added here during the coming weeks.
