R. Robert Mutrie’s definitive reference to Norfolk County’s pioneers, the encyclopedic The Long Point Settlers, catalogues the surviving historical record of those who pioneered in the Long Point Settlement (Norfolk County) by 1815. It is the definitive guide to more than 500 of Norfolk’s earliest families, indexing more than 3,500 names.

This alphabetic reference work lists each settler and his family. All sources cited are contemporary to the pioneers, including documents and letters they wrote; government, court and church records, land petitions, surveyor reports, assessments, wills, marriage registers, militia records, obituaries, and more. Modern cemetery transcripts document many of their final resting places.

You can spend years duplicating the author's effort, scouring the same archives Robert did, or you can buy this complete and fully documented resource to Norfolk County's founding families.

Crammed full of details unavailable in any other single source, Long Point Settlers is Resource One for Long Point Settlement researchers, many of whom describe it simply as their research Bible. Send questions by e-mail to R. Robert Mutrie robertmutrie@live.com

The Long Point Settlers Journals were quarterly publications edited by R. Robert Mutrie for over a decade from 1993 to 2004. In all, twenty-eight issues were published with insights into the early pioneers of the Long Point Settlement, the popular designation given to Norfolk County, Ontario during the day. Many authors contributed their ancestral research trail to the pages of the Journals with fully sourced detail of both the Canadian and the colonial American background for the first settlers. The biographies are unprecedented works making this an important addition to the libraries of Norfolk County researchers. The publication is 255 pages with pictures, maps and fully indexed.

R. Robert Mutrie wrote of the purpose of The Long Point Settlers Journals in Volume 1 Number 1: “In the course of researching my book The Long Point Settlers and talking with Norfolk County ancestral researchers, I learned so very much has been found and written privately about the earliest families of this province that a quarterly journal could be kept busy well off into the future. Our pioneer ancestors lived during a momentous period of history. Theirs were the years that created two nations- Canada and the United States. Each of them installed a building block for the edifice of posterity. Their contribution was not just a local one.

Many children and grandchildren joined the homestead movements to western Canada and the United States. In fact, descendants of the Long Point Settlement pioneers have also wandered onto other continents of the world leaving the legacy that whatever is worth having is worth working for. Our pioneer ancestors certainly did work to make a home for their families. Clearing just one acre and getting a crop in among the stumps was considered a major accomplishment for their first year. Those with grown sons could have as many as thirty acres cleared in two or three years by diligent effort. In addition they established local government, the mills, the churches, the schools, and the stores. The story of early Ontario is also one of people of conviction who fought a war for their beliefs.
