HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

All players

Handicaps are calculated from league match results only. Results in cup matches, individuals and breaks are irrelevant.

The method of calculation is as follows.

  • From the starting handicap, if a player wins a frame, then their handicap will be reduced by one point for the win and the margin of victory/100.

    • E.g.; if a player off a 20 start wins by 35, their revised handicap would be 18.65. If the player wins their next frame by 25, it would then go to 17.40 and so on.

  • If a player loses a frame, their handicap would increase by a point and the margin of defeat/100.

    • E.g.; if a player off a 20 start loses by 35, their revised handicap would be 21.35. If they lose again by 30, it would go up to 22.65 and so on

  • New handicaps are only published monthly at the league meetings

  • When published handicaps are rounded up or down to the nearest whole number.

    • E.g.: if a player has an actual handicap of 18.65 before the meeting, their published handicap would be 19, but if it was 18.35, it would be 18

New players

o Players who have never played in the league before

o Start off a maximum of 20 unless their ability suggests a lower figure would be appropriate. Players or captains should notify the match secretary if this applies

1. League matches 1-5; 3x the usual adjustment

2. League matches 6-10; 2x the usual adjustment (but if player wins or loses 80% or more of first five, then matches 6-10 at 3x)

3. Subsequent matches – usual adjustment applied (but if player wins or loses 80% or more of first ten, then matches 11-15 at 2x)

Returning players

o Players who have not been rot registered for any team in the league during the previous season

o Start off handicap applicable at the end of the season in which they last played

o First ten matches – 2x the usual adjustment

o Subsequent matches – usual adjustment applied (unless the player has won or lost 80% or more of their matches, in which case the 2x would continue to apply for the next five matches)
