VALLEY TRUCKLE CROSS

Iago Author's own Blight

It is possible that its original site was at the cross roads at a place called of Valley Truckle, about half-a-mile west of Camelford’ Maclean's A G LANGDON

The cross was found by Rev J J Wilkinson in the local black smiths at Valley Truckle not far from Cross Park where it had stood for several years with its head downwards. It had been used for the purpose of bending the metal tires on wheels. Part of the shaft had been rounded off and pierced through for fixing an iron staple.

Wilkinson set the cross up in the rectory grounds where it served as an ornament and thus preserved it. It was later moved to the church yard by Rev Roe.

The cross stands about 6”. This is one of the largest crosses known in the area. The two limbs are a common feature in this part of Cornwall others being known at St Juliots near Boscastle and St Clether, although this cross is the biggest of its kind.
