From the West Briton Thursday 14 APRIL 1887 A FORGOTTEN CHARITY

A Forgotten Charity - At the Lanteglos-by-Camelford vestry-room on Tuesday a piece of board which had been discovered gave rise to a great deal of discussion. It bore the following inscription: - "11 October 1804 Charles Phillips, gentlemen one of the Aldermen of the Borough of Camelford by his will of this date gave to Charles Carpenter Esq. of the said Borough one hundred and seventy pounds sterling," subjoined to which bequest are these words: - "In Trust and Confidence that he will and do Lay out and Expend the same for the benefit of the Poor of the Parish of Lanteglos by Camelford but not amongst those that have regular Pay or relief from the parish officers of the said parish. M. Carpenter desirous to give full effect to the Purpose of the testator in all times hence hereby makes this public declaration and record that he has charged his estate at Moditonham in the parish of Botusfleming in this county with the payment of the annual rent Charge or Sum of eight pounds and ten shillings being the interest of the before mentioned Principle sum of one Hundred and Seventy pounds at five Per Cent Per Annum for Ever, and that the deed creating such rent Charge is deposited in the Corporation Chest of the said Borough. The said Annual Sum is to be henceforth paid and Payable at Christmas in Every year by the owner of the inheratance of Modetonham." After a very long discussion, it was proposed by Mr. J.B. Tippett, seconded by Mr. W.H. Hayne, that the board should be cleaned and framed and placed in the tower of the parish church. - Mr. Hayne also proposed that the churchwardens should investigate the matter, and see where, when, and how this money has been, and is, given away. - This was carried unanimously.
