Trewalder Wheel Headed Stone Cross

Standing only 2’ 4 ½ “tall it would appear to be complete’ perhaps because it stood on a hedge it didn’t need a longer shaft

The cross was originally situated at the junction of 3 roads Mcleans states that the cross originally stood on a hedge at the corner of a field called Great Bovetown when the road was widened in the 1870s the cross was moved to the opposite side of the road. Interestingly the field opposite was known on the 1843 tithe map as Cross Park. It has been stated that the cross was moved in 1912 to the church yard; however it is marked on the 1930s map as still being in situ.

1843 Tithe map showing possible original position. Insert shows map from1881 after the cross had been moved.
