CASTLE GOFF 1 AND DELINUTH CAMP 2

Taken from Macleans and modified by me

1Castle Goff

Castle Goff is a small univallate Iron Age fort 80m in diameter. The earth rampart is 3.5m high with an outer ditch averaging 0.8m deep. The entrance faces west, blocked by a modern field wall which has used the defences.

At a later stage in the fort’s occupation an annexe was added on the west side. This is defined by a bank reaching a height of 2.0m, however ploughing has lowered it and the ditch has filled.

2 Delinuth Camp

To the north-west, at SX081830 and bisected by a track, is a univallate earthwork 150m in diameter.

Known locally as The Rounds its rampart has been ploughed away until it is no more than 0.6m high. Due to farming activity the ditch is very poorly defined.

This site is now surrounded by modern field walls.”

Celtic Lanteglos

St Julitta's church

Although the church building dates from the Norman period the saint is Celtic.

St Julitta's Well

First mentioned under Lanteglos Park 1189

Known as St Julitta at Lanteglos by Camelford and near Boscastle she is called St Juliot and thought to have been the patron of the chapel on Tintagel Island. She is also found under the names Gilt , Juliana and Illud.

A daughter of king Brychan a legendry 5th century king of Breconshire.

Her feast day is the 16th June

Both the church and the well are above the Allen

The river Allen

The meaning of the name Allen is unknown, it is however an ancient Celtic river word. That said the river wasn't always called Allen, owing to an error by a cartographer in the 19th century the river was until then called the 'Layne' 1470 or 'Laine' 1842 Another Celtic river name also meaning unknown. There is evidence that at even an earlier time the river may have been called 'Dewi' , another common Celtic river name. Along it can be found Pendavey or 'Pen Dewi' meaning 'Dewi head' and Tredavey 'Trev Dewi' meaning 'settlement on the Dewi'.
