The Lake Clear Conservancy welcomes you to “Did You Know?”, a monthly series of interesting facts about our lake and the surrounding area. We hope you will agree that, when it comes to Lake Clear, the better you know it the more you love it. Many of these monthly features, while short and sweet, will include a link for those who would like more information. And if you are an LCC member, you are invited to comment or add information to the comment section of the website.

Did You Know that, instead of the Ottawa River, there might have been an ocean lapping at the shores of Renfrew County? Lake Clear is located in an ancient rift valley known as the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben, which nearly split apart the North American continent 570 million years ago. Close call! The cliffs around the lake provide visible reminders of the earthquakes and faulting that occurred at that time.

The high hills adjacent to the lake mark the trend of the Petawawa fault line, and our beautiful views are enhanced by Ryan’s mountain, the highest peak in Renfrew County at 1716 feet. That is why ambitious cyclists from all over Ontario come to pedal up the Foymount Road!
