Boilermakers
Like Coopers Boilermakers had a guild or union. Generally only sons of boilermakers could enter the apprenticeships. In 1901 in Dublin about 150 Boilermakers existed. Most of these were employed in the Dockyards, or else the Railways. However it is safe to say the Mackeys worked in Dublin in the Dockyards. The Great Northern Railways (terminus Amiens Street) had their engineering works in Dundalk.

Boilermakers in the Docks
The trade of Boilermaker evolved from the industrial blacksmith and was known in the early 19th century as a "boilersmith". The involvement of boilermakers in the shipbuilding industry came about because of the changeover from wood to iron as a construction material.
It was easier (and cheaper) to utilize the boilermaker's skills to construct the ship as they were already
present in the shipyard constructing iron boilers for wooden steamships. This utilization of skills extended to
virtually everything that was large and made of iron, or later, steel.
Boilermakers were one of the senior trades in the Dockyard. They built and repaired all the boilers in the
Dockyard and on ships. Boilermakers carried out the construction and maintenance of the ventilation.
This included the funnel, which was the only part of a ship the shipwrights did not build. Boilermakers also built the catwalks in the engine rooms and around the boilers.
