In this unit we are concerned with the world in the aftermath of the Great War. From the post-war depression and the lethal flue pandemic, through the so-called Roaring 20's to the economic collapse of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, to the depths of the Great Depression, this was an era of hope and devastation.

Stalin. Robert Duvall as the Red Tsar.

he Battleship Potempkin. Russian film about the Revolutions.

Reds. Hollywood tells the tale of American fellow traveller John Reed.

Anastasia. Disney does the Romanovs in animation. Best show this to the littlies in the family.

The USA:

The 1920's was the golden age of Silent film. Be sure to see something from the era.

The Untouchables. Elliot Ness takes on gangsters in prohibition era America.

Al Capone. 1950's film about the gangster.

Bonnie and Clyde. A romanticized look at a particularly nasty bank robbing couple.

Chaplin. Movie about the silent film star's life.

The Cotton Club. The people and the place. A Harlem night club.

The Great Gatsby. Love and life for the privileged few.

They Shoot Horses Don't They. Escapism through dance marathons in the Great Depression.

The Grapes of Wrath. Life among the Depression era drifters. The novel is better though.

Of Mice and Men. Tragic lives in the Depression. Steinbeck's book is better.
