Integrated Supply Chain Management

About Supply Chain Management:
Supply Chain Management is receiving renewed attention in recent years. Interest in supply chain interdependence dates back to Jay Forrester's (1961) work reported in Industrial Dynamics. Different aspects of SCM, such as, forecasting, procurement, inventory-control, product and process development, production, transportation logistics, and distribution have already received much attention from the research community. However, the two important dimensions that differentiate SCM from these traditional concepts are (i) organizational integration and (ii) multiple flow coordination. The first dimension seeks opportunities by overcoming functional and organizational barriers while the second one addresses issues related to the inter-dependent flow of material, information and finance. The global business environment is imposing a challenge where competition between firms is fast becoming outdated. In the 21st century, therefore, supply chains will have to compete with supply chains. Simply stated, a supply chain is a network of facilities and activities that starts with the suppliers' suppliers and ends with the customers' customers for production and delivery of goods and services. The research community has identified several future research directions related to the development of planning and control models for coordination of both vertically integrated and non-vertically integrated firms. They have also highlighted the need for inclusion of the product and process development function in supply chain decisions. Research directions also point to the applicability of such concepts in the non-manufacturing sectors.
The thrust of our research is on the product development function and its impact on the supply chain configuration. Thus, the research aims to address issues related to design for supply chains. The focus is on enhancing front-end capabilities for helping firms challenge more aggressive supply chain strategies, such as, Early Design Involvement of Suppliers, Supplier Development, and Inter-organizational cross-functional team participation. One major issue is that of inter-operability, which adds up to massive rework costs in supply chains. Our allied research effort under IPPD (Integrated Product Development) aims to have a suitable front-end representation that can reduce such inter-operability problems. Candidates will be encouraged to pursue research related to design for logistics. The product design activity will be primarily supporting strategies, such as, postponement and mass customization. The domain test-beds currently identified are (a) the housing industry, (b) consumer durables and (c) handicrafts from rural India. The work will be attempting to pursue some of the objectives of the earlier established Computer Aided Product and Process Development (CAPPD) laboratory.

Expected Profile:
Interested candidates are expected to discuss their background with the faculty guide before finalizing their choice. Candidates interested in the above area of research may feel free to mark copies of their resumes along with a statement of purpose to Dr. Kaushik Sahu (e-mail:kaushiksahu@gmail.com)
Motivated candidates having an engineering degree (preferably with specialization in Mechanical or Civil Engineering) and with 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience will be suitable for pursuing the above research initiatives. The selected candidate will be pursuing some of the objectives of the earlier established Computer Aided Product and Process Development (CAPPD) laboratory. Prior experience as a System Administrator along with some working knowledge of database administration will be an added plus.
The University provides a fellowship to deserving candidate. Enterprising candidates will have the opportunity to earn more. However, the selected research scholars will be expected to exercise restraint while pursuing other objectives that may divert them from their original line of research.
