ACTION-BASED TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR
THE NATIONAL ALUMINUM COMPANY
(A Concept Paper)
Objective:
To start a series of unique action-based training programs with the assistance and active participation of NALCO in developing its local vendors [See Box 1: Vendor Development for NALCO]. Through this we are interested in developing a long-term relationship.
Box 1: VENDOR DEVELOPMENT FOR NALCO
This is a customized training package meant exclusively for small businesses catering to the needs of NALCO. The training is to be conducted in a participative manner where both the small industry (i.e. the supplier) and the large industry (i.e. the customer) will be required to interact [See Box 2: "TQM for Small Businesses"]. Such interactions would facilitate better communication of the quality needs of the organizational customer to its vendors. Thus, the participants would comprise of the representatives of the larger organization (i.e. NALCO) who would be in a position to explain the core processes of their different units alongwith a limited group of small-scale industries supplying similar parts. The idea is to develop several such modules with different small industry segments catering to the needs of NALCO.
The unique feature of this package will be a close follow-up module trying to track the progress of the various improvement activities initiated in the first module.

Box 2: TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
(A customized in-company program for the small scale sector)
OBJECTIVE & CONTENTS:
If you are managing a company, which is threatened by competition under this liberalized regime, then you must participate in this program along with your employees. The program is meant for a focused audience belonging to the same company. Our objective is to help companies move toward a cycle of continuous quality improvement. TQM will help you in identifying and cutting down wastes, reducing inefficiencies and bringing down non-conformances, thereby reducing costs and improving your organization’s performance.
The course contents will cover the various concepts, tools and techniques that are necessary for a structured approach to implementation of TQM. Your aim for continuous process improvement would expect you (as a team) to understand your process, your customers [such as NALCO] and your stakeholders. You will also be expected to design a proper measurement framework to help you monitor your process performance and take necessary actions for improvement. Detailed course content enclosed separately.
This program is a must for companies that have not given any thought to TQM but are interested in survival. Companies already started on the journey toward TQM can also participate in this program to help consolidate their TQM efforts.
