The integrated computational environment, called CSN-Designer, utilizes cognitive, symbolic, and numerical knowledge sources to guide the preliminary design process of injection molded components. CSN-Designer is a CAD environment built into the I-DEAS* software system using the I-DEAS programming language capability. The system is menu driven with one set of menus developed within I-DEAS using the I-DEAS programming language to activate the various design and analysis modules. Another set of menus is outside of I-DEAS and provides an interface called UMDA (UMASS Design Advisory), that allows the user to perform additional functions necessary for knowledge based design modifications. UMDA was developed using Common Lisp X. Inter-process communications and coordination between the CAD environment and the external knowledge based environment is done through suitable files. The knowledge-based environment generates program files for driving the modules within I-DEAS. The I-DEAS Command Language was used to control the various functions within I-DEAS and to extend the I-DEAS menu interfaces.
