The Cushing Library at Holy Names University was in the midst of a large-scale, multi-year weeding project when I was hired as a Visiting Librarian in 2014. The library hadn't done any significant weeding since probably the 1970s or 80s, and the shelves were quite impacted.Because of my background in Latin American Studies, I was tasked with weeding the PQ section - literature in Spanish, French, and other Romance languages. In the year and a half I worked the evening reference shift at HNU, I estimate that I single-handedly evaluated about 12,500 titles, and decided to weed the majority of them.I find that I have to agree with a librarian who came before me, who said that "I know no rules for discarding that eliminate the possibility of error. We all make mistakes but most of these mistakes I am convinced stand on the shelves." -Gladys Allison, Suggestions on Discarding (1938)
