Before February 2024, we had walked just two short sections at the Norfolk end of the Lincolnshire section of the coast path, and I didn't initially remember that we had walked any at all. This is because I had wrongly assumed that the border was at the point you cross the River Nene at Sutton Bridge, whereas the Norfolk/Lincolnshire border is actually in the middle of nowhere to the east of the river, so we must have crossed over it when on the Peter Scott Walk on 20th April 2019. We'd walked what is geographically the following leg, on a short New Year's Eve walk from Sutton Bridge to the lighthouse close to the mouth of the river that was once occupied by Peter Scott, and back, on 31st December 2018.
In 2024, we started to tackle the coast path around the rest of the county, though we were constrained by what was currently open. otherwise we'd find ourselves unable to cross water channels or with a lot of walking on main roads some distance from the coast. The 16-mile stretch between Skegness and Mablethorpe was already open so we walked this in two legs in on 24th February and March 2024, in each case returning to our car by bus. The opening of most of the stretch from Sutton Bridge to Skegness was announced in early September 2024. There is still a gap between Friskney Eaudyke and Gibraltar Point which will remain until a bridge is built over the River Steeping, but with the announcement of the opening of the rest of this section, we immediately altered our walking plans to enable us to progress west and north from Sutton Bridge. At the time of writing (September 2025), we have progressed from Sutton Bridge, down the River Nene, around the Wash, up the River Welland to Fosdyke Bridge and back, up The Haven (river) to Boston and back and up the western edge of The Wash to the middle of nowhere (Leverton Pumping Station) as well as walking from Gibraltar Point to Skegness.
