Clopton Way

The Clopton Way is an 11-mile walking route which links the Greensand Ridge Walk at Gamlingay Cinques to the Wimpole Way at Wimpole Hall. It is named after the deserted medieval village of Clopton which it goes through.

Although we could have walked the whole route in one leg, we were very busy so only able to spare Sunday afternoons for walking, en route to the Bedford South Premier Inn where we were spending many Sunday nights; so we decided to walk it in two legs. Although we walked the westernmost leg first, we walked both legs from east to west (because of uncertainties over parking on both occasions) so I will describe the walk in that direction i.e. from Wimpole Hall to Gamlingay Cinques. We walked the first leg in September 2016 and the second leg in October 2016. It was very pleasant walking, through a gently rolling landscape in South Cambridgeshire and a corner of Bedfordshire. It addition to Clopton, the route took us through the attractive villages of Arrington, Croydon and Cockayne Hatley, and around the outskirts of Gamlingay. We also walked through Potton Wood.

The route is described in a leaflet produced by Cambridgeshire County Council which is available here. It's also waymarked with "Clopton Way" signs, though these are a bit tatty and sometimes missing. The OS maps, in this case Outdoor Leisure Sheet 209 (Cambridge) for the easternmost half-mile and Sheet 208 (Bedford & St Neots) for the rest, were very useful. We also now track our walks using myTracks on Richard's iPad, and we had to use this to check the route on a couple of occasions.
