History

Reason behind highway name

The highway is named Jesus Christ Exwy because alot of Christians lived around were the highway (back then a 2 lane road of US 11E) and was nicknamed "Jesus Road" or "Christians Road".  So the governor of Pennsylvania (Governor Jordan - Also governor of New York & New Jersey) decided that when plans for the expressway came out it would be named "Jesus Christ Expressway".

Old Route Names & Numbers

US 11E

When the road was first build is was signed as the Tennessee - Pennsylvania Turnpike. When the first US routes were signed, the turnpike was signed a east alt route of US 11 & signed it US 11E (US route 11 East). US 11E followed the same routing as present day I-581 and connected to I-81 in Tennessee and exited I-81 at exit 304 onto Tennessee State Route 877 (SR 877) and ended at US 11 (N. Main St).

I-190

When the expressway was planned to replace the current US 11E in 1996, it was decided to be named "Jesus Christ Exwy" and signed the number I-190 (Interstate 190) to connect to I-90 (Penn - New York Thurway) (Present day I-80 Penn. Tpk). When I-90 was moved to its current alinement just north of Syracuse, NY in 1998, the old I-90 become I-80 (Penn. Tpk) at which the old US 11E become I-84. Also the part of the expressway north of I-90 was still routed as US 11E.

I-84 (1998 - 1999)

I-84 was a short lived route of the highway as it exited the I-80 (Penn Tpk) onto the Jesus Christ Exwy and Exited onto I-86 (The Southern Tier Exwy). At the time the portion of the expressway north of I-80 (Old I-90) was still signed US 11E. When I-84 was moved to its current alinement in Scranton PA in 1999, Jesus Christ Exwy was signed I-581, a child route of I-81, for all of its length.
