STATUS OF WOMAN
A women in Lahoul enjoys the unique position. She plays an important role in all the fields of social life. Besides maintaining the hearth she is able to perform all outside work. All the laborious work is done by Lahouli women like carrying water, harvesting the crops, carrying loads and the agricultural operations except ploughing. The women are very strong because of hard physical work, but very soon they look much older then the men. Lahouli women enjoys better social status and economic security. In the matter of inheritance of property she has been enjoying many rights. She could inherit the property of the family in case she has no brothers. If she is unmarried, she looks after the property by staying in the inherited house. Similarly the widow also can inherit the property if she has no brother-in-law. If a girl decides not to go in to matrimony she has the right to claim a maintenance on equal status with her brother. She also takes leading part in festival and functions in an equal participation in dances with men. At present Lahouli women is also playing significant role in politics. She is actively taking part in panchayat elections and other political affairs. Lahouli girls are now highly qualified, working in various governmental and private sectors. Mahila Mandals are working for the upliftment of rural women by making them self dependent. In practice the status of Lahouli women is much higher as they are responsible for household and outdoor activities.
