CLIMATE
*********************************************************************
There is remarkable variation in the climate of Lahoul. The general elevation in the area is above 2,700 m with the greater part of the area having elevation ranging from about 4,000 m to 6,000 m. Pattan valley has less elevation and hence cultivators sow and reap two crops during the spring summer and autumn. The upper regions are snow covered till May and again starts snowing in the end of the year. The winter season starts from the middle of November to March, is followed by the spring which lasted up to end of May. Next four months are the summer season. October and November constitute the transition season. In July and August there is sufficient rainfall in the lower part of Lahoul and around Rohtang Pass. Lahoul has recorded heavy snowfall in winter. The air is generally very dry over the area particularly in the summer and transition season in the winter also. The air is very dry except during spells of rain or snowfall. From December to May sky becomes heavily clouded. In the summer season there is some moderate cloudiness. In the rest of the year the sky is mostly clear or lightly clouded. Due to heavy snowfall in winter there is a risk of falling snow avalanches. Lahoulis have very bad experiences of destruction caused by snow avalanches which has taken thousands of lives till now.
