INTRODUCTION :- The geography of the region provides us with the background to understand human reaction, their adaptation to environment and the way the activities and the culture of man have progressed through the ages. The geological study of this area are vital not only for understanding structures, rock formations and the evolution of landforms but also for various other practical reasons, like investigation of mineral deposits, construction of dams and diversion tunnels for harnessing hydel power etc. The face of the area presents a network of mountains which intersect each other in every direction. In between the mountains, there are several glaciers. The average elevation of the peaks in Lahoul is betweeen 5,480 m and 6,400 m. The lowest point is 2,740 m where river Chenab makes its exit from the district.
BOUNDARIES:- Lahoul and Spiti in the western Himalayas is situated between
31°44' 57" and 32°59' 57" north latitude and between 76°46' 29" and 78° 41' 34" east longitude. Lahoul is separated in the north from Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir by the Baralacha range which has a average height of 5,500 m and in the east is Spiti . In the south -west and west the area is separated from Kullu and Chamba district by the lofty range with a average elevation of 4,500 m.
