The people of Lahoul are amongst the most delightful in the world. They are humorous and light hearted even in adversity, fond of good living and almost entirely guile. Most of them have delicate and well formed features and are simple and unsophisticated. Social influence in this area had come quite late and isolation of valley has facilitated the survival of people and civilization occupying them to this day. Lahoul has been home to solitude loving people from ancient times. People from different areas approached this side because of several reasons. The people of Lahoul are a mixed race; and linguistic research indicates that in remote times the country was inhabited by an aboriginal tribe, analogous to the Munda speaking tribe of Bangal and Central India. Survivors of the same ethnological stock are to be found in the Kanawar Kothi of Rupi Waziri in Kullu, in the isolated village of Malana and in the Bushahr tract on the Satluj. At a later period, Tibetan settlers came in from the north and east from Rupshu and Ladhak in to the head of Bhaga valley and from Spiti and Tibet in to the head of the Chandra valley near Khoksar. Aryans and semi Aryans also came from the west and south, and the Lahulas at the present time are the ultimate product of the amalgamation of these different races.
