Descendants of Smith Massy Berry (1787-1863)

 (4th generation of descent from probable progenitor Thomas Berry I of Castlecuffe, Queens Co. :- https://sites.google.com/site/irishberrygenealogy/eglish-berry-tree )

1.  Smith Massy Berry (son of Thomas BERRY and Frances Berry), b. 3 April 1787, d. 26 Feb 1863. Buried at Eglish. Lived at Cloneen until the death of his wife. Held 57.5 acres with 268 acres of bog in Cloneen, and 76 acres with 5 acres of bog and common at Gabruss. He also had a flax mill.

     He married, 30 Oct 1818, Martha Adams, b. 1800, d. 7 Mar 1833; buried at Eglish. Dau. of Rev. Allan Noble Adams of Shercock House, Co. Cavan, by Isabella, dau. of John Battersby of Lakefield, Co. Meath.

                             Children:

                      i      Thomas Francis Berry, b. 11 Nov 1819, d. 4 Jan 1852, buried at Eglish; unmarried; miller

                      ii     Isabella Adams Berry, b. 21 Nov 1820, d. 3 Jan 1848, buried at Eglish; unmarried.

                      iii    Allan Noble Berry, b. 27 Aug 1823, d. 1890, buried at Eglish. Lived at Irishtown, Fivevalley. Owned 138 acres in King's Co. valued at £22.5.0 p.a.

                             He married after 1851, Mary Meara, b. 1810, d. 1860. Buried in the Catholic churchgraveyard in Eglish. 

Grave inscription reads :

Erected by Allan Berry in memory of his beloved wife Mary Berry

Depd this life August 25th 1887 aged 50 years

Sixth Generation

2.  Marlborough Parsons Berry (son of Smith Massy Berry), b. 1 Jul 1825, d. 29 Sept 1898 in Dublin, buried at Lucan. J.P. King's Co. Owned 137 acres in King's Co. valued at  £17.10.0 p.a. 

     He married 18 Sep 1862, Louisa Heuston, daughter of John Robert Heuston of Russelstown, Co. Tipperary.

                             Children:

            3.       i      Annie Martha Berry b. 10 Aug 1863, d. 19 Aug 1889 at Belvidere, Co. Westmeath. No children.

                             She married, 10 April 1888 at Birr, Gustavus Rochfort Wade, b 20 Feb 1858 in Dublin, d. 29 Jan 1931 at Mullingar. B.A., M.A.  Assumed the name and arms of Hyde by Royal Licence 15 Sep 1898. J.P.  Co Westmeath. High Sheriff 1910.

                      ii     Eva Berry, b. 13 Aug 1864 at Cloneen, d. 12 Feb 1915.  No children.

                             She married 9 Jan 1895, at Leixlip, Langlois Benjamin Turbett, b. 1866, d. 1937; wine merchant of firm R.E. Turbett & Sons of Dublin..

            4.       iii    Massy Gamble Berry b. 26 Apr 1866.

            5.       iv    Isabel Berry b. 20 Feb 1868.

                      v     Frances Berry, b. 28 Apr 1870 at Cloneen, d. 21 Jul 1882 at Ballywalter Co. Tipperary; buried at Eglish.

                      vi   Marlborough Arthur Berry, b. 29 Oct 1871 at Cloneen. Alive in 1914; lived at 141 Brunswick St., Dublin. Automobile engineer.

Seventh Generation

3.  Annie Martha Berry (daughter of Marlborough Parsons Berry), b. 10 Aug 1863, d. 19 Aug 1889.

     She married, 10 April 1888, Gustavus Rochfort Wade, b. 1858.  M.A.  J.P.

                             Children:

                      i      Anne Frances Jane Wade, b. 1889.

4.  Massy Gamble Berry (son of Marlborough Parsons Berry), b. 26 Apr 1866 in Ireland; d. 25 Nov 1924 in Sonoma County, California.  Emmigrated to USA via Canada in 1905; naturalized 1910; fruit/poultry farmer in Sonoma County.

     He married c. 1896 Anna Anderson b. 26 Apr 1866; d. 25 Nov 1924 in Sonoma County; daughter of ?Anderson of Ontario.

                             Children:

                      i      Eva Mary Louise Berry b. 22 Dec 1896, Canada; d. 7 May 1943, Marin County.

                             She married Frank L. Comstock, b. 13 Mar 1890, Michigan; d. 15 Oct 1958 Marin County. No children.

5.  Isabel Berry (daughter of Marlborough Parsons Berry), b. 20 Feb 1868.

     She married James Adie Menzies, d.20 Mar 1942. Ed. at Edinburgh, Vienna, Dublin and London. M.B. C.M. (Edin.) 1891  L.R.C.S.E. 1892. Opthalmic Surgeon

                             Children:

                      i      William Alan Menzies, b. 23 Jul 1897 at Ootacamund, d. 14 Jun 1917; killed in action behind Ypres. WW1 enlisted in 3rd London Scottish. 2nd Lieut. R.G.A. Served in France from 26 Dec. 1916; present at Arras, Vimy Ridge, Beaumetz and Messines. B.W.M. Victory Medal.

                      ii     Eileen Menzies.

                      iii    ? Menzies.  Died young.
