(Last updated on 12/10/2022)
1. Robert Fleetwood Berry (son of Thomas BERRY and Frances Berry), b. 1 Jan. 1777, d. 21 Aug.1822, buried at Eglish; of Shannon Harbour, King's Co. As a very young man he was apprenticed, from 1793 until sometime after 1801, to Mr John Brennard, a cotton merchant of Castle Street, Liverpool. Correspondence he had while in Liverpool with his older sister Hester and his mother Frances, survives (see Appendix at bottom of page). By 1804 he was back in Ireland, working in the linen trade in Dublin. However, he returned to King's Co. and in 1812 was living at Gallen, being employed in connection with the Grand Canal. He died suddenly at Shannon Harbour, three weeks after the death of his youngest daughter. The circumstances surrounding his untimely death are unknown. I have been unable to find an obituary in contemporary newspapers and it seems possible that he took his own life.
He married, 14 Nov. 1812 at St Catherine's Church, Tullamore, Elizabeth Crow, b. 1786, d. 8 April 1848; buried at Eglish; second dau. of Edward Crow of Tullamore, Kings Co., by Margaret Newcomb, dau. of William Newcomb of Aughanvilla, Kings Co.

Transcripts of Letters to Robert Berry from Family Members 1703-1804
Robert Fleetwood Berry (1777-1822) was the twelfth child and seventh son of Thomas Berry (1738-1815) and his wife, Frances (1743-1807) of Eglish Castle, who had sixteen children between 1759 and 1787. In 2011 I was able to read and record 27 surviving letters, the majority of which were written by various members of this Berry family to Robert who, at the age of 17, was apprenticed to Mr John Brennard, a cotton merchant in Liverpool. Of 25 letters addressed to Robert, 17 were from Hester, his oldest sister, who was married to Sir William Smith (later Cusack-Smith) and was based in Dublin with her four children. Five were from his mother Frances, from Eglish Castle. One was from Thomas, his father. One each were from his older brothers, John and Sterling. The two remaining were from Mrs L'estrange, a neighbour, to Frances Berry and possibly from Martha Berry to Elizabeth Crow. The letters, which span the period between 1793 and 1804, and were lodged in the Offaly County Library by Lt. Col. Francis Nangle, appear to be a collection of random survivors. Transcripts were recently made by Bruce Trewin and edited by me - sometimes a difficult task because of illegibility of handwriting and fading or damage. Nevertheless, they give an insight into some personal events in the lives of Robert, Hester and Frances Berry and the contemporary socio-political situation. Frances was clearly closely involved with the lives of all her children and shared local gossip and news. Hester was ambitious and supportive of her husband’s career (e.g. letter 15) and mentions several social events in Dublin such as a ball and a performance of a Shakespeare play (letters 7 and 10). These transcripts, with the exception of the last two, may be viewed in "Attached files" at the bottom of this page.
