Descendants of James Armstrong Berry (1770-1827)

(4th generation of descent from probable progenitor Thomas Berry I of Castlecuffe, Queens Co. :- https://sites.google.com/site/irishberrygenealogy/eglish-berry-tree )

1. James (Jemmie) Armstrong Berry (son of Thomas BERRY and Frances Berry) b. 13 July 1770, d. 9 Oct 1827. James held the lease to the mill and mill lands of Irishtown (Ballynegulsy) from 1803. He lived there all his life on the townland of Ballinagulna, about half a mile from Eglish. A Capt. in the Eglish troop of Yeomanry Aug. 1808. Describes himself as a farmer and miller in the 1821 census.

[ James Berry Mitchell erected a memorial to her in the Eglish Berry Burial enclosure. The inscription, recorded by Rev. J.T. Webster of Frankford Rectory in 1921 is said to read “Erected by James Berry Mitchell in memory of his mother, Margaret Mitchell, daughter of the late James Armstrong Mitchell, (sic) who died 1905.” In my view this probably contains a transcription error and ‘James Armstrong Mitchell’ should read ‘James Armstrong Berry’. Moreover, there is a tombstone recorded by Pat David in 2008, presumably erected in 1935, with the inscription “James Berry Mitchell died 1935 age 73”. If this is correct, James Berry Mitchell is the son of Margaret Berry and ? Mitchell ]. Thus:-
