Season Re-cap
by Andrew Edwards
The 2005 team lost some players from the previous year, mainly 5th year handlers. The team still had a lot of talent though. The team lost Francis, Bald, Wicky (dan west), Kampfe, Cram, Lindeen, and Dedwards. The team would pick up Brian Gleason, David Zear, Michael Kane, Joe Reichle, Brady Bird, Ben Harner, Justin Park, and Erik Kleiber. Once again, Ethanol used numerous players from IHUC in the fall. At Cooler, IHUC finished 2nd in the beer bracket. The team sent split squads to the Grinnell tourney and combined on Sunday to win it all. Fall-Out saw a team full of rookies lose all but one game. Then a team of veterans went to CCC again. The team lost a close one to Michigan, won a close one to Chapel Hill, destroyed Berkeley and lost a tight one to KU. The next day, the team ran out of gas and lost to both Georgia and Georgia Tech. The team knew that they could hang with every other team, but had to work to get to the next level.
In the spring, the team went to Mardis Gras, and had a lackluster Saturday, but once again was in prequarters and beat LSU. In quarters, the team lost to a solid Texas team, that ended up getting 2nd at the tourney. Next tourney was the Stanford Invite, which was cancelled on Saturday because of rain. The team scrimmaged Oregon and Oregon State and lost both games. On Sunday, the team lost a close one to Washington, a team that would make quarters at nationals in 2005. The team struggled the rest of the day, until finally beating UCLA, to avoid getting last. The season went down even more, when an 11 man squad went down to Centex, which was the season’s most competitive tourney. The team scored some, but never won a game. Next tourney was Fools Fest, where the team lost in quarters to eventual championship runner-up Colorado.
The team had a terrible record going into sectionals, which were once again up at Luther. Luther and Iowa State were much better this year than last, and IHUC still decided to bring a small squad on Saturday. The team cruised until the Luther game at the end of the day. It was close throughout, but IHUC managed to come out victorious. The next day, the rest of the team showed, and for the first time the entire season we had a squad. We played a tough Iowa State team twice, but won both times, to claim IHUC’s forth straight undefeated sectional title. Regionals, in Northfield would have us be a 4 seed this year, because Minnesota was having a good year. We had to play ISUC in quarters and it was a tight game, but IHUC pulled it out. The team played well against Madison in semis, but let things get away and lost big. One more loss and the team would be done for the season. The next game was against Minnesota, a team that had never beaten us. But they played hard, and we could not make the plays and lost 14-7 to end the season.
Final rank: 57 out of 402
Final record: 16-19
Sectionals: 1st
Regionals: 5th
