Season Re-cap
by Andrew Edwards
The spring of 2002 returned several veterans, including Elijah Edwards and John Pirnat, who were the only ones on the nationals squad 3 years prior. To instill dedication, 7 members of the team lived in an ultimate house, which held parties a couple times each semester. Two med school transfers Kevin Kampfe and Tim Kresowik joined this year, as well as Dan Kresowik, Andrew Edwards, Matt Berry, Mark Groteluschen and Garret Turnquist.
2001 Fall tourneys included Tune-Up, Exit 69, Fall-Out, and Club Sectionals. The team had a solid performance as the best college team at Club sectionals, barely missing out on club regionals. The team captured the championship at Fall-Out, against Illinois, who would make it to nationals in the spring.
The first tourney of the spring was Mardis Gras, where the team went 2-1 on day one and got bumped up to the ‘A’ bracket on Sunday. But inexperience led them to a defeat against Texas A&M in the first Sunday game and the tourney was over. A rookie team then traveled to Ames for a tourney in which the temperatures were well below freezing, with high winds and snow. There was only outside play on Sunday, and the team did well. The team got accepted to Terminus, in Atlanta over spring break, but brought a really small squad. The first game was against perennial nationals team, Tufts. Up 14-10, IHUC lost 15-14. The team went on to lose all the rest of the games and finished last place. Next tourney was at Big 10s in Champaign, and the team finally brought a good squad. Highlight of Saturday was an unbelievable comeback against Indiana. On Sunday, the team went down in quarters to Ohio State. Next tourney was Midwesterns, where there were both club and college teams. The team gave both Madison and CUT great games, but lost both. Then IHUC destroyed Winona State, a sectional rival.
Then it was sectionals in Iowa City. IHUC cleaned up, and got the 3 seed at regionals. Regionals had horrendous weather the entire time, up in Northfield. There were 3 bids to nationals. IHUC won their first two games, before meeting CUT in semis. The game went back and forth, but CUT pulled it out in the end. IHUC then beat GOP and St. Cloud to take the 3rd bid to nationals. At nationals, the team was the 15th seed, and went up 8-4 at half against both William and Mary and Madison, but lost both games. Both of those teams made semis that year. We won one game, against George Washington, to claim 13th place.
Final Rank: 33 out of 275
Record: 17-18
Sectionals: 1st
Regionals: 3rd
