In case you missed our meeting Tuesday, or want to revisit it, here is my report!
14 Members and 2 Guests were in attendance. Both guests were visiting for the second time. Erica joined at the end of the meeting. Welcome Erica!
We had a great meeting with Harry's tip of the day, 2 prepared speeches, and 3 table topics.
Eric started out the meeting with sports commentary to which Dolores ceremoniously yawned. He then introduced himself as the Toastmaster and quickly reviewed and filled the roles.
SPEECH TIP OF THE DAY:
Harry shared a new way to capture the audience's attention in 10 seconds - begin with a startling statistic to underscore your message and add a wow factor, i.e., my take: "Sports is not the best discussion topic to engage your listeners when greater than 65% of your audience is women!!!"
PREPARED SPEECHES:
Doug spoke on using "Language as a Vehicle to Communication," and shared entertaining stories and commentary on the perils of cross-cultural communication. He also spoke about the value and importance of verbal and non-verbal forms of communication using words, gestures, and facial expressions. He inspired and impressed with his knowledge of multiple languages. Well done Doug!
Nathan taught a 7-Minute Crash Course on Wine, in 5 and a half minutes, and empowered us to pick the right wine for any occasion. He quickly reviewed the 7 varietals of grapes that make up 80% of the world's wine and handed out a great visual aid to assist us in looking like we know what we are doing in the wine aisle. We are sure to impress our guests and our palates with our new found wine knowledge. Thanks Nathan!! (p.s. don't forget to laminate my wallet-sized card :)
TABLE TOPICS:
Our Table Topics Master, Nannette, brought in fortune cookies to spark table-topic ideas! Whoever volunteered to speak chose a cookie and allowed Nannette to read their fortune, which was then used to inspire commentary. They were asked to share whether they agreed or disagreed with the essence of their fortune... It was interesting to hear how Faye, Yoyo, and Min created modern meaning utilizing ancient wisdom. Very fun and creative way to come up with interesting table-topics topics, Nannette!
Awesome meeting. Great group. Good times.
Next we we have a backwards meeting - Tisha will share more via email.
I will be gone next week, so I will see you in 2 weeks at the POTLUCK. Please sign-up to bring yummy food :)
