At today’s meeting there were 14 members and 3 guests. Our returning guests were Ryan, Michael and Brad. Ryan joined Irvine Lunchtime Toastmasters Club today. Please welcome Ryan German to our club!
The meeting started promptly at 12 noon with Yoyo Chang, Sergeant-At-Arms, introducing our President, Harry Yan, DTM to call the meeting to order. Harry had just returned back from attending the Toastmasters International Convention in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and he had a wonderful time in Hong Kong and in Kuala Lumpur.
The club mission statement was read by Yoyo Chang.
Our Toastmaster of the Day, Fernando Reyes, CC did a wonderful job guiding us through the meeting agenda. He ensured that all the meeting roles were filled and had the Ah Counter - George Scott, Grammarian – Richard Tatunay, Timer – Maki Karasawa and General Evaluator – Margaret Yamamoto, CL describe each meeting role.
The word of the day was aplomb which means self-confidence was used by many of our speakers.
The Toastmaster of the Day, made it a point to exchange our Competent Leadership manuals to get credit for the meeting role assignments.
Next, the Speech Tip of the Day from Harry Yan, DTM was about “How to Captivate Your Audience in the First 10 Seconds”. Harry’s observation from the World Champion of Public Speaking in Kuala Lumpur was that the speaker who best connected with the audience, won the championship. The winning phrase used by the champion speaker to connect with the audience, “I see something in you, but I don’t know what it is!” was repeated throughout the speech and storytelling. So speakers, do your best to connect with the audience.
Yoyo Chang volunteered for the Humor of the Day. She is trying to get as much stage time as possible as she plans to participate in the Humorous Speech contest to be held at our club on September 16, 2014. The winner of the contest will compete in the area contest on September 20, 2014.
Our two fantastic speakers were Fumiko Tajima, ACB, ALB and Nannette Kazan, CTM. Fumiko’s speech was from the Entertainment advance manual Project #2. She entertained us with stories about how certain words that sound similar can have a total different meaning if the pronunciation is not clear such as “hiring” vs. “firing”. Even her own name “Fumiko” is pronounced as “Humiko”.
Nannette’s Project 5 speech opening statement was about how there are 73 million obese adults in the US. Nannette shared a personal story about how she was overweight with low esteem as a teenager and how she took control of her life by starting to move and lose the weight. Nannette informed us to choose what you like to do and start moving! She demonstrated the 20 second high intensity workout called Tabata – the shortest workout in the world!
Table Topics Master, Noel Dalmacio enlightened us with the theme “Summer Vacation”. As no one volunteered, Noel used a great technique of selecting the table topic speaker by selecting a person who had birthday in a selected month. Our table topic speakers were George Scott, our guest, Michael and Yoyo Chang. George discussed how he grew up on the east coast but never visited New York; Michael wanted to take his 3 kids to the “Red Woods” where there are no Wi-Fi or cell towers, just nature; and Yoyo wanted to go back in time to meet with Robin Williams. She entertained us with her humor: “Laughter is the best medicine, but if you laugh for no reason, you need medicine”.
Evaluators, Dolores Lara for Fumiko and Tisha Templeton for Nannette did an amazing job with the speech evaluation. Great positive tips were suggested by both to the speakers.
Great listening skills were demonstrated by giving detail report for each speaker by the Ah-counter, Grammarian and Timer. It was George and Maki first time in these meeting roles. Great Job!
Overall, we had another wonderful and fun meeting today. Great job everyone!
