Figs grow abundantly in Malta. The fresh fruit can be savoured during spring and summer. There are a few varieties of the tree that bears the fruit. Once a fig tree reaches maturity, it can produce fruit once to twice per year for many years.

Dried figs are one of Malta's popular dried fruits. The dried figs are cut up and dried on the a flat surface in a sunny position. Once dry the dried figs are stored in containers to be eaten during the winter season.

During the drying of the figs they attract many insects. Everybody likes dry figs including the insects.
