Dear Colleagues,

### You may download the final program at the end of this entry. ###

the EAGE Near Surface Geoscience 2014 will be held at Athens on 15-17 September of 2014.

The EAGE Near Surface Geoscience 2014 in Athens has the innovation to be a multi-event conference where with the same fee everyone can participate the following events:

We have the honor two important colleagues to give Keynote Speeches in very interesting topics:

  • Professor Don Steeples (SEG President) “Development of Near-Surface Seismology During my 40-Year Career”
  • Dr Koya Suto (ex-President of ASEG) “Near-Surface Geophysics and Australia’s Challenge”
  • Professor Michael Zhdanov (University of Utah) “Paradigm change in subsurface imaging using 3D inversion of electromagnetic data”

Also two workshops are organized on the 14th of September 2014 in the hot topics for Near Surface Geophysics nowadays with some of the best in the world experts been as conveners:

  • Time-lapse ERT monitoring (Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Dr. Torleif Dahlin, Dr. Jung-Ho Kim, Dr. Robert Supper, Dr. Panagiotis Tsourlos)
    • Introduction to Geoelectrical Time lapse Monitoring
    • Geoelectrical Monitoring instrumentation, raw data processing and quality assessment
    • Geoelectrical Time lapse data inversion and Modelling
    • Geoelectrical Monitoring Applications I: Hydrogeological and environmental monitoring
    • Geoelectrical Monitoring Applications II: Contaminant monitoring
    • Geoelectrical Monitoring Applications III: Landslide and Permafrost monitoring
  • Seismic and GPR methods for urban and microzonation studies (Dr. Julian Ivanov, Dr. Jianghai Xia, Dr. Chih-Ping Lin, Dr. Oz Yilmaz)
    • Optimizing the application of passive MASW in urban environment with the combined use of 1D and 2D receiver arrays
    • Near-surface shear-wave velocities and quality factors derived from high-frequency surface waves
    • Considerations of Surface Wave Testing in Complex Subsurface Settings
    • Applications of Engineering Seismology in Urban Areas

Two interesting field trips are organized in famous places that they are very much connected with geosciences, mining activity and archaeology:

  • EAGE daily field trip to Lavrion (ancient mining activity and geophysical exploration there) and to Sounion Cape with the famous Temple of Poseidon
  • HGU 3-day fieldtrip to Santorini Island (a place being a geological laboratory as well as one of the first touristic destinations of the world) with boat trip in the caldera, visits to Akrotiri archaeological site and Oia and final presentations:
    • Dr. George Vougioukalakis, Researcher Volcanologist, Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration. “Santorini Volcano evolution and the 2011-2012 unrest”
    • Dr. Dimitris Sakellariou, Geologist, Research Director, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. “The submarine volcanic field of Santorini: geology & geophysics, tectonics, volcanic centers”
    • Dr. Andreas Tzanis, Geophysicist, Associate Professor, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, “Internal structure and contemporary deformation of the Santorini Volcanic Complex: A synthesis of Geophysical, Seismological and Geodetic observations”

Athens in September is an excellent place to visit with the special occasion of the EAGE Near Surface Geoscience 2014 Meeting

See you in Athens ….

To strengthen through Applied Geophysics and our presence the collaboration and the development of our teams, countries, regions.
