Faucet

Project Based Tutorials - Modeling

This is a fast and simple method of creating a basic faucet with knobs.

Faucet

Step 1: Create a Cube (Objects=>Primitive=>Cube) and set the sizes to X=1000m, Y=20m, Z=300m, with 8 segments for X and 3 segments for Z. Make the Cube editable (Structure=>Make Editable).

Step 2: You are going to pull out polygons and rotate them to create the neck for the faucet. Switch to polygon mode (Tools=>Polygons) and use the Live Selection tool (Selection=>Live Selection) to select the four forward middle polygons of the object. Switch to the Extrude tool (Structure=>Extrude) and extrude the polygons 150m by inputing 150 in the Offset field of the Active tool dialog.

Step 3: You're going to be switching back and forth between the Active Tool dialog for the Extrude tool and the Coordinates Manager for a while now. In the Coordinates manager input 30 for P under Rotation.

Step 4: Back in the Active Tool dialog, click Apply again to extrude the polygons another 150m.

Step 5: Rotate the polygons 30 degrees again for P.

Step 6: Extrude again for 150m.

Step 7: Input 20 degrees for P Rotation in the Coordinates Manager.

Step 8: Select the Normal Scale tool (Structure=>Normal Scale) and scale the polygons down by 50%.

Step 9: Switch back to the Extrude tool and Extrude 200m.

Step 10: Rotate again by inputing 10 for P under Rotation in the Coordinates Manger.

Step 11: Extude 100m, and then Extrude again 150m. This is done so that you will have the proper size polygons when you pull out the spout.

Step 12: Select the two bottom polygons formed from your last extrusion. Extrude these polygons 100m.

Step 13: Switch to the Extrude Inner tool (Structure=>Extrude Inner) and input 30m in the Offset field in the Active Tool dialog. Click Apply.

Step 14: Switch back to the Extrude tool and input -150m in the Offset field in the Active Tool dialog. Click Apply.

Step 15: Create a HyperNURBS object (Objects=>NURBS=>HyperNURBS). Drag and drop the cube into the HyperNURBS object. Rename the HyperNURBS object 'Faucet'.

Knobs

Step 1: Hide your Faucet by clicking the top grey dot to the right of the object in the object manager until it turns red. Create a cube and make it editable.

Step 2: In polygon mode select all the side faces of the Cube. Extrude the polygons 150m.

Step 3: Switch to the Normal Scale tool and scale them down to about 50%.

Step 4: Use the Extrude tool again to extrude the polygons 50m.

Step 5: Switch back to the Normal Scale tool and input 200% in the Active Tool dialog field and click Apply.

Step 6: Extrude the polygons again by 200m.

Step 7: Now select the top middle polygon and Extrude it 10m.

Step 8: Select the Bottom middle polygon and Extrude it 200m.

Step 9: Extrude it again for another 200m.

Step 10: Use the Normal Scale tool to Scale the polygon to about 200%.

Step 11: Make a final extrusion of 10m.

Step 12: Create a HyperNURBS Object and drag the Cube into it. Rename the HyperNURBS Object 'Knob'

Step 13: Unhide your Faucet object. You'll notice that the Knob is rather large. Select the Model Tool and scale the Knob object down to about 50% by either scaling by hand or by entering 0.5m for all the axes in the Coordinates Manager.

Step 14: Position the Knob at X=400, Y=255, Z=0.

Step 15: Create a Symmetry Object (Objects=>Modeling=>Symmetry) and drag and drop in the Knob Object. You should be presented with two Knobs on each side of the faucet.
