This unique final exam allowed us to understand major events that have occurred over time to affect higher education and make it what it is today. One event that is worth noting that had an impact on my development was in 1901 when Joliet Junior College was founded. William Rainey Harper, president of the University of Chicago, created the first community college when he grew concerned about the high number of under-prepared students that were entering the university. He believed a different kind of institution was needed to serve these students well. Joliet Junior College gave students the first two foundation years of a baccalaureate degree and additional academic help to prepare them for transfer to their junior year at a university, as well as occupational programs to prepare students for entry into the workforce. Harper's notion took hold in America. Over the next two decades two-year colleges began to open excessively around the country. I find this very inspirational that one person could do something so extraordinary to solve a problem, especially in this time era. It was a great decision that has changed history. I am passionate about community colleges as well. My GED students I worked with are very thankful for this too as this is how they can transition to college.
