This assignment was similar to the previous one and I was able to gain important advice on my future administration in higher education. We were required to observe a different type of setting for this class. Many issues were raised in a meeting and a valid point was brought up regarding not only the department’s image, but the image of Georgia Southern University. Dr. Julie Maudlin brought up the topic of Georgia Southern being a “student-centered” college. This is very relevant to the topic of symbols and leadership in the textbook. The topic was brought up because the university has a new policy regarding the removal of students from classes for nonpayment. The consensus at the meeting is that this policy is unfair and unnecessary to students and faculty.
I learned a few things from the meeting. One was to be respectful of other people's opinions. I also learned how much professors and staff care about the students because they want things to be done in a fair and appropriate manner. I will most certainly put my students first and think about what is best for them in my decision making. This meeting also allowed me to realize the importance of the institutions image. I will do my best to make sure that any decision I make reflects a positive and professional image for my department.
