This subject had very high relevance in my practicum setting and my personal growth in the program. It is interesting that Hispanics are the fastest growing population in the US yet have the lowest educational attainment level. I love that the GED is a way of showing that a student wants to turn their life around after stopping their education. Unfortunately, not enough GED recipients go on to seek as much higher education as they can, although I personally am an exception to this. I am glad that other forms of post-secondary education are encouraging different races to apply for school, such as technical and community colleges. Many students have specific interests as well as families which cause them to be bound by a specific location, so these institutions can help adjust to that. Chapter 13 of the textbook also raised a good point. Converging two worlds requires the use of cultural translators, mediators, and role models to give information and guidance that can help students decipher unfamiliar college customs and rituals. Therefore to help minorities feel more comfortable all around in their college experience, institutions can run events and programs such as Black History Month, Women’s Studies, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations to raise awareness of cultures.
