We had a few important questions to answer regarding race in this chapter's assignment. One that stood out the most to me were the guidelines for an affirmative action admissions policy. We had to describe the three approaches to setting up and justifying a voluntary affirmative action program. The race-neutral, race-conscious, and differential approach. All can be implemented lawfully, but the potential for legal challenge increases as the school proceeds from a race neutral to a differential to a race-conscious approach. The race-neutral action policy involves revising the institution’s admissions standards so they’re more sensitively attuned to qualifications and contributions of all applicants. The race-conscious policy gives some form of advantage available only to minority applicants.
This entire assignment did a good job of explaining the legality surrounding racism and discrimination that I did not know about. Admission is a career option I am looking at so now I have a much better understanding of proper procedures that would go on in that workplace to avoid discrimination. In my adult education practicum setting, most of my students are of different races, so this topic really caught my eye.
