Good way to start is to brainstorm your ideas and write these down
When working in a team, it is important to allow for everyone's input
Next, go through all the ideas and highlight the ones you really like
Re-evaluate the idea so it matches the objective of the video. For example: is it educational? Why do you need this video? What will be its purpose
Once you have your idea, post it on top of a big white board
Now brainstorm about all the ideas that come to mind when thinking about this topic
Write them all down
Creating a script or story board
From your ideas relating to the topic, can you see a story line?
Connect the words or move them around so you can create the story line
Shorter clips are easier to make so circle all the ideas you can visualize in some way - those will each create short videos
Each video tells a story so it needs a few parts:
Beginning or introduction: what is the topic and what is the purpose for this movie?
Middle: this is the bulk of the movie, short clips that tell the story
The climax: this is the highlight of the movie, what is the essence and how can you bring this out?
The ending: tie up loose ends, send everyone off with something to think about or again, make your point
The credits: scrolling credits with all those involved
From all your brainstorming, ideas on the board, and story lin, create an actual script using the various parts in your movie and write everything separated in clips.
Storyboard your movie
Now that you thought of ideas, visualize each clips and decide how you will do / act out each clip, what and who you will need.
Use a template to design each clip, maybe draw pictures in the box and write what you need below
These are the various aspects you will need to identify for each clip:
who is the actor? or actors?
who will film?
What props will you need?
Where will you film it?
What are the lines the actor(s) need to say?
Use a storyboard template to organize each clip:
See attached or in PED 515 dropbox folder for storyboard start + scene templates
Aesthetics
Before you set up the various shooting clips, you need to think about what you want it to look like
Where will you shoot the clips? Should you rent out a space (classroom, gym,...)
What should people wear? Who will supply the costumes?
Light and sound are important. Will you hear the people talking, what video camera will you use?
Hair and make-up? Is it needed?
Casting
If you are using actors, you will need to ask them and you will need to find out their availability.
Decide who will be best for each role. Sometimes you may want to see them in action before you can decide who you will use in your film.
You will also need to go over the lines with the actors. The shorter the clips, the easier it will be to simply explain what you need before the shooting, do a practice run and shoot the clip. With longer clips you will need to provide the lines ahead of time.
You can use the same people for different roles if you dress them up.
Make sure you relate the story board to them and allow for their personality to shine through.
Set up & Film
At the day of the filming itself, you should make sure you are at the scene to set everything up before actors arrive
