Developmentally Appropriate Progression on integrating technology and fitness:
Note: This progression is accumulative; students need to understand each step in order to move on successfully. Depending on where your students are at, you should revisit certain concepts. It is not appropriate to simply strap a heart rate monitor on a student if they student does not understand the purpose of the tool or what it means to be in the healthy heart rate zone.
Grades K-1
- Feel heart,
- Show heart,
- Understand the difference between a fast heart beat and a slow heart beat
- Understand what activities cause different beats,
- Size of heart,
- Placement of heart,
- Purpose of heart / heart beat
Grades 2-4
- Pulse monitors + Heart rate zone,
- Understanding the number,
- Pointing at the number on the chart,
- Knowing their own zone and that it changes with age,
- Thumbs up or down to increase or decrease intensity to stay in the zone.
- Students create their own fitness plan (grade 3 ish) showing: cardiovascular activities, muscular fitness activities and flexibility.
- Students start to learn about health related fitness and FITT components
Grades 5-8
- Students should understand how to use the various fitness components and FITT principles.
- Students use physical activity monitors, pulse monitors and learn about heart rate monitors.
- They start to calculate steps, calories, maximum heart rate, resting heart rate and personal heart rate zones.
- Students practice these skills using a variety of physical activities to gain an understanding of the relationship between physical activity and fitness
Grades 9-12
- Students will explore the training principles and create their own fitness plan.
- Once they have their own plan according to pre-test results and individual needs and desires.
- Students use goal setting and complete 6 to 8 week workout plans
- Students complete a post assessment and assess their own fitness performance and progress.
- Students reflect and re-evaluate their own fitness goals.
- Students will motivate and help others to achieve fitness goals.
