February 1st, 2013 - More Salmon!

A few more salmon have hatched this week. We probably have about 5 sac fry! We looked at the first sac fry from January 18th under the magnifying scope and were able to see some growth and development (photo on the left). The mouth opening and closing was visible! It also swam in circles in the petri dish of water! Every time we tried to record the video, he/she stopped swimming. There is a short video below showing some motion of the head.

We also saw one sac fry in the process of hatching! In the right image below you can see the sac that has pushed out of the egg but the body of the fish is still inside the egg membrane. Students saw the eyes move and the body of the salmon wiggling through the membrane! It was incredible to observe first hand. We are at about 59% of the cumulative developmental index and should see lots more salmon hatch this week. Click on the images below to see enlarged photos.
